Neural-network metamodelling for the prediction of Caulerpa taxifolia development in the Mediterranean sea

چکیده
This paper addresses the use of neural networks as a metamodelling technique for discrete event stochastic simulation to reduce signi"cantly the computational burden involved by the simulations. A sophisticated computer model has been developed to anticipate the propagation of the green alga Caulerpa taxifolia in the northwestern Mediterranean sea. The simulation model provides reliable predictions, a couple of years in advance, of the covered surfaces. To reduce the heavy computational burden involved by the simulation, a neural network was successfully trained on arti"cially generated data provided by the simulation runs to provide accurate forecasts 12 years in advance, along with associated con"dence intervals. The neuralnetwork metamodel is competitive in accuracy when compared to the simulation itself and, once trained, can operate in nearly real time. ( 2000 Elsevier Science B.V. All rights reserved.

An algorithmic model for invasive species: Application to Caulerpa taxifolia (Vahl) C. Agardh development in the North-Western Mediterranean Sea
The purpose of the study is to evaluate the propagation of the green alga of tropical origin Caulerpa taxifolia (Vahl) C. Agardh in the north-western Mediterranean sea—introduced in 1984—by means of an algorithmic computer model. In order to take into account spatial interactions and anthropic dispersion or activities such as eradication and introduction of specific predators, the model is base...
متن کاملThe Caulerpa racemosa invasion: a critical review.
Caulerpa racemosa var. cylindracea is a marine Chlorophyta introduced into the Mediterranean Sea from south-western Australia. Since 1990, it has been invading the Mediterranean Sea and the Canary Islands, raising ecological problems. Although this invasion event can be considered as one of the most serious in the history of species introduced into the Mediterranean Sea, C. racemosa has not tri...
متن کاملRe-evaluation of the extent of Caulerpa taxifolia development in the northern Mediterranean using airborne spectrographic sensing
There has been significant concern over development of the tropical green alga Caulerpa taxifolia in the Mediterranean Sea. Reports dating back to 1991 predicted that the species would expand exponentially on all types of substrata and displace major components of the coastal benthic flora, in particular the dominant native seagrass Posidonia oceanica. A pilot study of the Bay of Menton, SE Fra...
متن کاملEffectiveness of the California state ban on the sale of Caulerpa species in aquarium retail stores in southern California.
The invasion of the aquarium strain of the green alga Caulerpa taxifolia and subsequent alteration of community structure in the Mediterranean Sea raised awareness of the potential for non-native seaweeds to impact coastal communities. An introduction of C. taxifolia in southern California in 2000, presumably from the release of aquarium specimens, cost ~$7 million for eradication efforts. Besi...
متن کاملAlien Invasion: the spread of Caulerpa taxifolia in Australian waters
Alien Invasion: the spread of Caulerpa taxifolia in Australian waters The eradication or control of introduced marine pests will represent one of the greatest challenges of this century. Indeed, hundreds of introduced marine species are already present in Australian waters. Marine pests pose such a challenge because by the time they are discovered they are usually well established and almost im...
